Book Review

Fun House
by Chris Grabenstein

Series:
#7 in John Ceepak

Category:  Mystery

Average Rating:  4.0

What if a reality TV show like Jersey Shore set up production in the fictional seaside resort Sea Haven? What if hitting the gym, tanning, and doing a little laundry aren't the only things the contestants get into?

By-the-book officer John Ceepak and his wisecracking young partner, Danny Boyle, have to babysit the buff and boozy kids partying it up in a Jersey shore rental house for TV's summertime hit Fun House while simultaneously trying to stop the rowdy kids from breaking the law up and down the beach.

But even Ceepak and Danny can't stop one young cast member from being murdered--and others from being threatened with the same fate.

I find this seventh episode in the Ceepak series to be a little disappointing. Thanks in part to the spot-on narration of Jeff Woodman, it's still an above average mystery, but it's not quite up to the outstanding entertainment of previous books in the series. The subject of reality TV just doesn't do it for me and the satire is just too thick and unreal, making it difficult to really get into the story. There are the usual laugh-out-loud moments and both Ceepak and Boyle are true to character, but many of the other characters are too cookie-cutter and flat. I do think it's a nice touch that Christopher Miller from Grabenstein's other series was incorporated in this story. I just hope Chris Grabenstein will strive to make his next episode in this series more realistic.
